In Stock Chesterfield Chairs

Waiting a couple of months for a handmade chair is a perfectly reasonable trade when the piece is built by hand, and yet there are moments when waiting is simply not an option. The spare room has become an office, the corner by the window has sat empty since you moved in and a chair has finally given up entirely.

That is exactly what this collection is for, since every piece here is a genuine handmade Chesterfield chair built in our Manchester workshop by the same makers who build our bespoke pieces, except these ones already exist. They are finished, wrapped and waiting, which means most arrive within one to two weeks at a price meaningfully lower than the same design ordered from scratch.

Once a particular chair has gone it is genuinely gone, because no two stock pieces are ever quite identical.

02

Where Our Stock Chairs Come From

Nothing here is factory overrun or seconds from a production line, which is worth saying plainly because “in stock” means something rather different at most furniture retailers.

  • Ex showroom chairs that have stood on display in excellent condition rather than being lived with
  • Ex photoshoot pieces built in the workshop for our own campaigns and photographed only a handful of times
  • Cancelled and returned orders, usually where a piece simply would not fit through a customer’s doorway
  • One off colour combinations created as samples in the workshop and never repeated afterwards

Most stock chairs are effectively new and are sold exactly as pictured. A small number are reduced further because of a mark or a minor imperfection, and where that is the case we describe it honestly in the listing rather than leaving you to discover it on delivery day.

03

The Only Difference Is Timing and Choice

The craft behind a stock chair and a bespoke commission is identical, because both leave the same workshop. Each one is built around a hardwood frame using traditional joinery, deep buttoned by hand so the rows line up properly across the back and the wings, and upholstered in the same materials we use on every order.

What you give up is the ability to specify every detail yourself, and what you gain is a substantial saving on a piece that arrives in a fraction of the usual lead time. Every chair still carries the same frame and the same guarantee as the rest of our range.

04

What You Will Find

Stock changes constantly and no two weeks look quite the same, though chairs make up a good share of what appears at any one time.

Wingback chairs turn up most often of all, from tan leather with tweed detailing through to grey velvet, and they are usually the least expensive way into the collection. Prices on chairs have recently started around £922, which is a considerable distance below the same design commissioned new.

Snuggle chairs appear regularly too, in velvet and in herringbone wool, and they rarely last long because the one and a half seat width is the most requested size we make. Single seat armchairs show up in smaller numbers, while the occasional patchwork chair is a genuine one off that will never be repeated in the same combination.

05

Leather or Velvet

Stock chairs come in whatever material they were originally built in, and the two that appear most often are the two that suit the shape best.

Leather is the version most people carry in their heads, all warm tan and gently creased where the buttoning pulls the hide inward, and it only improves as the years pass. Velvet does something quite different, catching light around every single button and giving a tall wing chair a real sense of theatre. Herringbone wool and tweed appear regularly as well, particularly on the countryside palettes, and they are the most forgiving choice in a household with dogs.

How to Shop the Stock Collection

Buying from stock rewards decisiveness, so a little preparation before you start browsing makes the whole thing considerably less stressful.

  1. Measure the corner first and note the maximum width and height you can live with, because stock dimensions are fixed.
  2. Measure the route in, including doorways, hallway turns, stairwells and lifts, since chairs arrive fully assembled.
  3. Read the listing carefully for any noted marks so you know exactly what you are getting.
  4. Check back weekly, because new pieces are added regularly and the best ones rarely sit around.
  5. Move quickly on anything unusual, particularly patchwork chairs, since there is only ever one of each.

If nothing here is quite right, a made to order chair gives you complete control over size, colour, leg finish and material for a wait of around six to eight weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I receive a stock Chesterfield chair?

Typically one to two weeks from purchase, against six to eight weeks for a made to order piece. Chairs can also be collected directly from us if you would rather not wait for a delivery slot.

Why are stock Chesterfield chairs discounted?

They are reduced because of how they came to exist rather than how they were built. Ex showroom, ex photoshoot and cancelled orders all end up here below the price of the same design ordered new.

What condition are your stock Chesterfield chairs in?

Most are effectively new and sold exactly as displayed, having never been used in a home. A small number are reduced further to reflect a mark or minor imperfection, which is always noted in the description.

Can I change the fabric or size of a stock chair?

No and that is the trade you are making for the price and the speed. Stock chairs are sold exactly as shown, so our bespoke service is the route if you want to specify your own combination.

Do stock Chesterfield chairs come with the same guarantee?

Yes, every stock piece carries the same hardwood frame and the same guarantee as the rest of our range. You can read the full terms on our guarantee page before ordering.
