In Stock Chesterfield Sofas & Chairs

Falling in love with a handmade sofa and then waiting a couple of months is a perfectly reasonable trade for something built by hand, and yet there are moments when waiting simply is not an option. You have just moved in with nothing but a mattress and good intentions, the old settee has finally given up and the family arrive in three weeks.

That is exactly what this collection is for, since every piece here is a genuine handmade Chesterfield sofa built in our Manchester workshop by the same makers who build our bespoke pieces, except these ones already exist. They are finished, wrapped and waiting, which means most arrive within one to two weeks at a price meaningfully lower than the same design ordered from scratch.

Once a particular piece has gone it is genuinely gone, because no two stock items are ever quite identical.

02

Where Our Stock Pieces Come From

Nothing here is factory overrun or seconds from a production line, which is worth saying plainly because “in stock” means something rather different at most furniture retailers.

  • Ex showroom pieces that have stood on display in excellent condition rather than being lived with
  • Ex photoshoot pieces built in the workshop for our own campaigns and photographed only a handful of times
  • Cancelled and returned orders, usually where a sofa simply would not fit through a customer’s doorway
  • One off colour combinations created as samples in the workshop and never repeated afterwards

Most stock items are effectively new and are sold exactly as pictured. A small number are reduced further because of a mark or a minor imperfection, and where that is the case we describe it honestly in the listing rather than leaving you to discover it on delivery day.

03

The Only Difference Is Timing and Choice

The craft behind a stock piece and a bespoke commission is identical, because both leave the same workshop. Each one is built around a robust hardwood frame using traditional joinery, deep buttoned by hand so the rows line up properly across the seat and arms, and upholstered in the same materials we use on every order.

What you give up is the ability to specify every detail yourself, and what you gain is a substantial saving on a piece that arrives in a fraction of the usual lead time. Every piece still carries the same hardwood frame and the same guarantee as the rest of our range.

What You Will Find

Stock changes constantly and no two weeks look quite the same, though the collection generally spans the full breadth of our range.

Classic two, three and four seater sofas appear most often, from the deep antique tans everybody pictures through to soft neutrals that sit quietly in a modern room. Larger corner Chesterfield sofas turn up less often and move quickly, so a discounted corner sofa is one of the better bargains here.

There is usually a steady rotation of Chesterfield armchairs and wingback chairs too, which is the easiest way into the collection without committing to a sofa. The snuggle chair sitting between an armchair and a two seater is always worth checking for. Because every patchwork sofa is stitched panel by panel from different tweeds and velvets, the stock versions are true one offs.

04

Leather or Velvet

Stock pieces come in whatever material they were originally built in, and the two you will see most often are the two that suit a Chesterfield best.

Leather is the version most people carry in their heads, all warm tan and gently creased where the buttoning pulls the hide inward, and our full grain hides only improve as the years pass. Velvet does something quite different, catching light around every single button and turning the piece into the thing everybody looks at. Deep greens, inky blues and dusty pinks all appear, and a discounted velvet piece is usually the fastest listing to disappear.

05

How to Shop the Stock Collection

Buying from stock rewards decisiveness, so a little preparation before you start browsing makes the whole thing considerably less stressful.

  1. Measure the room first and note the maximum width you can live with, because stock dimensions are fixed.
  2. Measure the route in, including doorways, hallway turns, stairwells and lifts, since pieces arrive fully assembled.
  3. Read the listing carefully for any noted marks so you know exactly what you are getting.
  4. Check back weekly, because new pieces are added regularly and the best ones rarely sit around.
  5. Move quickly on anything unusual, particularly patchwork and corner pieces, since there is only ever one.

If nothing here is quite right, a made to order piece gives you complete control over size, colour, leg finish and material for a wait of around six to eight weeks.

06Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I receive a stock Chesterfield sofa?

Typically one to two weeks from purchase, against six to eight weeks for a made to order piece. Items can also be collected directly from us if you would rather not wait for a delivery slot.

What does ex-display mean for a Chesterfield sofa?

It means the piece has stood in a showroom or was built for one of our own photoshoots. It has never been lived with, so it arrives in the condition you would expect of a display model.

What condition are your stock Chesterfield sofas in?

Most are effectively new and sold exactly as displayed, having never been used in a home. A small number are reduced further to reflect a mark or minor imperfection, which is always noted in the description.

How is a stock Chesterfield different from a made-to-order sofa?

The craft is identical, since both are built in the same Manchester workshop by the same makers. What changes is timing and choice, because stock pieces arrive far sooner but cannot be altered.

Are stock Chesterfield sofas cheaper than made-to-order sofas?

Yes, and the saving is meaningful rather than nominal across most of the collection. Every listing shows the original price alongside the reduced one, so the difference is there to see.

Do stock Chesterfield sofas come with the same guarantee as made-to-order sofas?

Yes, every stock piece carries the same hardwood frame and the same guarantee as the rest of our range. You can read the full terms on our guarantee page before ordering.
