Handmade Fabric Chesterfield Sofas

A fabric Chesterfield sofa keeps every detail that makes the shape recognisable, the deep buttoning, the rolled arms and the low level back, while softening the whole thing considerably. Where leather reads formal and traditional, cloth reads warm and lived in, which is why so many people choose it for a room the family actually uses.

It also opens up a far wider palette than hide ever could. Over a hundred colours run through the wools, velvets, linens and tweeds, so the same frame can look quietly Scandinavian in a pale weave or thoroughly dramatic in a deep jewel velvet.

Every piece is handmade to order in our Manchester workshop and delivered free across mainland Britain within six to eight weeks.

02

Why Choose Fabric

  • It feels warmer under the hand in winter, where leather takes a few minutes to reach a comfortable temperature
  • It forgives everyday marks more quietly, since a textured weave hides the scuffs of family life better than smooth hide
  • The colour range is far broader, running well past the tans, browns and blacks that leather tends to be limited to
  • It suits lighter modern rooms, where a dark antiqued hide can look heavy against pale walls and simple joinery
  • It costs less than the equivalent leather, so a larger size or a better design often comes within reach
03

Fabric Types

Each cloth behaves differently once it is stretched across the buttoning, which is where the character of the sofa is really decided.

  • Velvet is the most theatrical, catching light around every button so the piece becomes the thing people notice first
  • Wool brings texture without any shine, sitting comfortably alongside beams, flagstones and the original fireplaces of older properties
  • Tweed adds warmth and pattern, and its flecked weave disguises everyday wear better than almost anything else we offer
  • Linen keeps everything light and relaxed, which suits garden rooms and south facing spaces filled with afternoon sun
  • BouclĂ© gives a soft looped texture that has become the most requested contemporary finish across the whole collection

Our fabric range sets out every weave in detail, and a fabric and leather mix is also available if you want the character of both.

Designs Available in Fabric

Almost every silhouette we make can be upholstered in cloth rather than hide.

05

Styling a Fabric Chesterfield

Cloth gives you far more freedom with colour than leather does, which is worth using rather than defaulting to a safe neutral.

Green has quietly become the favourite among our customers, while grey slips in alongside almost any existing scheme. Deeper shades read as more dramatic in velvet than they ever do in wool, so the same colour can behave two entirely different ways.

  • Pair a Chesterfield armchair in a contrasting weave rather than matching the sofa exactly
  • Add a wingback chair beside the fire for height in a corner that would otherwise sit flat
  • Set a Chesterfield footstool in leather against a fabric sofa, which stops a scheme looking too uniform
  • Layer textured cushions and a throw, since cloth takes layering far more comfortably than a smooth hide does
06

Cleaning and Care

  • Vacuum weekly with an upholstery attachment, paying attention to the buttoning where dust settles into the folds
  • Treat spills immediately by blotting rather than rubbing, which pushes the mark deeper into the weave
  • Rotate and plump the cushions regularly so the seat wears evenly across its full length
  • Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight, which fades a dyed cloth faster than most people expect
  • Consider a fabric protection treatment at the point of order, particularly in homes with children or pets

Handmade in Manchester

Every frame is built from kiln dried solid beech, glued, dowelled and screwed at all major stress points, with serpentine sprung backs and dual reflex foam cushions. The buttoning is pulled by hand so each row lines up across the seat and arms, and the studding is applied individually.

Frames, sundries, fabrics and leathers are all sourced locally from the North West, and every frame carries our ten year guarantee.

08Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Are fabric Chesterfield sofas durable enough for everyday use?

Yes, particularly in wool, tweed or a tight weave, which stand up to daily family use for many years. The frame beneath is identical to our leather pieces and carries the same guarantee.

What is the best fabric for a Chesterfield sofa?

There is no single answer, though wool and tweed are the most practical for a busy household. Velvet is the most striking, while linen suits lighter rooms where a relaxed look matters more than hard wear.

Are fabric Chesterfield sofas easier to maintain than leather sofas?

Not necessarily easier, though the demands are quite different from one another. Leather wipes clean in seconds but shows scratches, while fabric needs regular vacuuming yet disguises everyday marks far better.

What types of fabric are available for Chesterfield sofas?

Velvet, wool, tweed, linen and bouclé, alongside fabric and leather combinations on selected designs. More than a hundred colours run across the range, with your choice of leg finish included.

How do I clean and care for a fabric Chesterfield sofa?

Vacuum weekly with an upholstery attachment and blot any spill immediately rather than rubbing it. Keep the sofa out of direct sunlight and plump the cushions regularly so the seat wears evenly.

Can I order fabric swatches before buying a Chesterfield sofa?

Yes, and we would encourage it before spending this kind of money. Up to six free swatches arrive within a few working days, with no card details required.

How do I choose between a fabric and leather Chesterfield sofa?

Choose leather if you want a piece that ages into a patina and wipes clean instantly. Choose fabric for warmth underhand, a far wider colour range and a softer look in a lighter room.
